“UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd would like to inform our customers in Malaysia that we have received confirmation from our principal, Toyota Motor Corp, Japan that all Toyota and Lexus models sold by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd are not affected by this voluntary safety recall exercise,” the company said in a statement today.
It was reported that Toyota Motor Corp is conducting a voluntary safety recall campaign on approximately 550,000 units of certain Toyota and Lexus models in Japan and other affiliates around the country.
This was to address the possibility that the crankshaft pulley may become misaligned causing noise or illumination of the discharge warning light. In some cases, there could be result of a sudden increase in steering effort.
According to reports, the affected cars are the 2004 Avalon, the 2004 and 2005 Camry and 2006 Highlander HV. Under the Lexus brand, the 2004 and 2005 ES330, the RX330 and the 2006 RX400h all have the same flaw.
Although the recall is global, reports claim that the bulk of the vehicles affected are those sold in the US.
Early last year, a faulty accelerator pedal problem forced Toyota to recall millions of vehicles in the US, Europe and China. Models sold in Malaysia were not unaffected by the recall.
